gerber blades pocket knifeOne thing that I learned about hunting in the outdoors is that you never know what you are going to run into. That is why I think it is important to make sure to add pocket knives to your hunting gear. I mean you should never go walking out into thick trees or tall grass without having any kind of self defense.

I’m not talking about you should be scared to be out there in the nature, I’m just saying you should always be prepared because it has been known for animals to attack humans. Maybe some of those people could have been more prepared if they had some kind of pocket knives in there pocket.

gerber blade knivesAfter hunting this past week I have come to a conclusion that it works great to have 2 different knives when it comes time to field dressing your deer. A helpful tip for gerber blades knives is that when you use a gut hook knife that you should only use it in bigger areas and for cutting back the skin under the stomach.

When it comes time to cutting out the private parts you should use a skinny knife. The reason why I say this is because you want a small knife with a good point on it to get in small areas. The bulkier ones with no point at the end just don’t get the job done as well. Either way gerber blades knives has a knife to fit your needs.

ka-bar knivesFor awhile there I thought that only deer hunters were the main buyers for the ka-bar knives. Well, it turns out I was wrong. The military are very much into using these knives. There are so many different varieties that they are able to fit a knife to each one of there uniforms. If they want a short knife, or a long knife they can get it.

I mean if ka-bar knives are good enough for the military to use, then they should be excellent for us deer hunters. Just remember that you don’t leave these knives around for your children to get a hold of because they are very sharp!

sanitizing your hunting knivesOne thing you should always do after you field dress your deer is sanitize your hunting knives. This is very important to do. Some people just rinse it off and put it back in the case and leave it until next time that you skin a deer. The only problem with that is there is a lot of bacteria and germs from wild game.

There is a lot of diseases out there now and well one way of prevention is to sanitize your hunting knives. It only takes a minute. All you need to do is keep a container of bacterial wipes in your vehicle and just wipe your knife off when you done. It is that easy and you know that you have one less chance of spreading diseases.

gerber blade knivesYou wouldn’t believe how people get gerber blade knives mixed up with the name gerber for baby products. I mean for most people when they hear the word gerber they automatically think baby products. Well, guess what in this case it has nothing to do with baby products.

I just wanted to clarify that gerber blade knives has its own line of products and we don’t want to confuse it with baby products. Don’t get me wrong I love the baby products, but not for hunting deer. And I certainly wouldn’t add gerber baby products to my hunting gear.

cold steel knivesEverybody knows that hunting the deer is fun, but how about when it comes time to processing your own deer. This can be fun too, but do you have the right knife to do it with? I would like to introduce to you cold steel knives. They have a great variety of solid, sharp knives.

I just want everybody to know that I am only talking about these knives for a deer hunter stand point. Cold steel knives have many uses, but I am only interested in using these knives for processing your deer. Nothing is worse than processing your deer with the wrong knife.

Ka-Bar KnifeThis review isn’t on multiple Ka-Bar hunting knives. This one is about one in particular. It is a  Ka-Bar USMC Tactical Knife. Here are two positive reviews:

1. At 7 inches long, the epoxy powder coated blade is the perfect length for utility or tactical use. Ka-Bar uses a clip point design, which even makes the USMC knife useful for hunting and skinning.

2. The guard and pommel are made from carbon steel. This means that your fingers have excellent protection from slipping unto the blade. The steel pommel is rugged enough to make a nice hammer or mallet in the field.

These were just two good reviews about Ka-Bar hunting knives. There are many more positive reviews and I will share them in future blogs.

Cold Steel KnifeObviously from the title you can tell that I will be talking about cold steel hunting knives. First of all there are many different shapes and sizes of these knives. There are the fold up types or just your regular straight knives. Because there are so many to choose from, you should decide on what you are using it for. Each cold steel hunting knives serves its own purpose.

Lets take skinning a deer for example, if you are skinning a deer you would want a little narrow knife because of all the small areas and corners. Now if you want to cut up meat you would want a thicker knife that is easier to hold. Cold steel hunting knives are great, but if you get the wrong knife for the wrong job, you will wishing you had a better knife. But it’s not the knife’s fault! You just don’t have the right knife for that job. So make sure you think it through first of what cold steel hunting knife you should have in your hand!

Gut Hook KnifeGut hook knives are a cool knife to have. If you hunt large game, a good kind of hunting knife to carry is a gut hook knife. The reason why I like this kind of a knife is because I don’t like to pop the guts of the animal while I am gutting it out. If you have ever had to field dress an animal, you will know how careful you have to be when you gut a deer. The last thing you would want to do is pop its gut.

The only thing that separates this from other hunting knives is that the gut hook knife has a hook at the end of the tip of the knife, and a regular knife has a straight tip at the end. The gut hook knife serves its purpose well and sticks out the best out of all the other hunting knives when it comes to field dressing large game.
